The new series Intimate Interiors by a Colombian-born artist and architect Juan Mejia is the culmination of minimalist aesthetic and a triumph of simplicity. In this selection of work, stripped even from colour, Mejia overlays plates of aluminium foil with photographs of ar- chitectural fragments and urban scenes - facades, roofs, false skies - printed on vinyl. This series revolves solely around the construction of volumes, the perfection and subtlety ex- pressed in cuts and folds, the austerity of the form and the accuracy of the line.
Through the duality of matter and antimatter present within these works, the artist illus- trates the spirit of the city - inevitably formed of both tangible elements, such as building fronts, as well as intangible elements such as human behaviour, memories and interac- tions.
Via the isolation of metropolitan detail and by streamlining its form, Juan Mejia transforms the exterior into an intimate and familiar space, providing it with a sense of identity tinted with futuristic vision.
